Home Improvement

Carpentry, tile and home improvements, built by the crew that paints

Mera Painting specializes in painting, and does home improvements too. Whether you are revamping your home or customizing a property you just bought, Alex and the carpentry crew turn the plan into finished rooms.

Where a carpentry job goes wrong

Most renovation trouble starts before a single board is cut. A measurement taken in a hurry, a material ordered without checking what is already on the wall, a trim profile that is close but not quite right: each one looks small on the day and shows for good once the paint is on. Crown moulding is the classic case. It looks simple on a straight wall and turns difficult the moment the wall curves, the ceiling runs out of level, or the house is old enough that no two corners agree.

A homeowner in Chatham, NJ wrote that other carpenters came in, measured, gave pricey estimates and even started repairing the crown moulding before never coming back. The curved wall was the sticking point, because matching the existing profile looked like weeks of hunting for material. That is the pattern to watch for when you hire for trim work: the hard part of the job is the part some crews avoid, and a clear plan for the awkward corner is worth more than a low number for the easy ones.

Painting is the specialty here, and that shapes how the carpentry gets done. A painter knows what a finish does to a gap, a nail line or a joint that moves with the seasons. Wood that will be painted gets built with the paint in mind from the first cut, so the final coat lands on a surface that was made to hold it.

How the work runs, with Alex leading the carpentry

Alex is the lead carpenter, and the carpentry side covers kitchens, bathrooms, basements, porticos and porches, decks, siding, trim and molding, additions and renovations, flooring and tile work. Every job begins the same way as a paint job: a free estimate and a walk-through where we look at what is under the finish, not only at the finish itself. Soft wood behind a window, a floor that is not flat, a wall that is not plumb: it is far cheaper to find these on day one than on day nine.

Tile gets its own care. The layout is planned from the room outward before the first piece is set, so cuts land in corners and behind fixtures where nobody looks, and the pattern reads straight from the doorway. Floors and walls are checked for flat before tile goes on, because tile shows every flaw in what is under it. A bath surround, a plank-look floor or a mosaic band in a shower all depend on that quiet prep.

Having one crew that carpents, tiles and paints cuts out the hand-off between trades. A new casing, base or panel is built, caulked, primed and finished by people reading the same plan, so nobody waits on a painter who has not been scheduled yet. The process we aim for runs from the first estimate straight through to the final walk-through, and the same names stay on the job the whole way.

Design help before you spend a dollar

Our team of specialists offers design services made for the budget-conscious client, and the useful part is the order of the conversation. Before anyone picks a tile, we talk through what the space has to do, what can stay, and where the money earns the most. A finished basement, a refreshed bathroom and a new run of built-ins all pull on a budget differently, and a plan that names those tradeoffs early keeps the project from drifting.

Color is part of that. If you need painting ideas, our Color Consultants can help you narrow a wall of swatches down to a few that suit the room. We look at colour in the light the room really gets, morning and evening, next to the floor, the counters and the trim you are keeping, because a shade that looks right on a chip often reads differently on a long wall. For the painting itself, see our interior and exterior painting work.

Older houses add one more layer. Renovation disturbs old paint, and Mera Painting and Home Design is licensed, bonded and certified to follow EPA lead-safe work practices, with New Jersey Home Improvement License #13VH03579100. That means careful preparation, HEPA vacuums for dust and debris, and wet wiping and wet mopping with plenty of rinse water. Every job carries a warranty, because we are committed to your full satisfaction.

The trades board

One crew, four trades on the same street.

Tile, basements, built-ins and stair trim are some of what the list covers. Add kitchens, bathrooms, porticos, decks, siding, flooring and additions, and most of the work around a house has someone on the team who has done it before. If the room also needs color, our painting crew finishes what the carpenters build, and the cabinet refinishing team can bring tired kitchens back without a gut job.
